Plan your move

Give the move a sequence.

The most useful relocation timeline starts with your own dates: interviews, offer decisions, current housing obligations, arrival, and your first day of work.

Use these phases to see what needs attention. Some will overlap, and the order can adapt as your plans become clearer.

01 / While you are exploring

Identify the likely work locations and what you want to understand about living here. Share the timing of an interview visit early enough to consider an area orientation. A short list of priorities will make that time more useful.

If someone is moving with you, include their questions from the beginning. A professional opportunity also needs to work as an everyday-life decision.

02 / Once the move becomes likely

Confirm the dates you know and label the ones still tentative. Review your current lease or home-sale needs. Decide whether the first housing step is a rental search, a purchase, or a temporary stay while you learn the area.

For a purchase, begin lender conversations and discuss the documents and timing they will need. For a rental, ask each provider about availability and application requirements.

04 / When housing is arranged

Track the dates and responsibilities in your contract or lease. Coordinate any inspections, financing steps, insurance, move-in requirements, utilities, and key handoff with the relevant parties.

Check the gap between your housing dates and your arrival. If a temporary stay is needed, confirm availability, terms, parking, and what is included before relying on it.

05 / Before your first day

Confirm the practical essentials: access to your home, the moving delivery, utilities, internet, and any household arrangements you need immediately. Try the route to your assigned work location.

Keep your employer's onboarding tasks alongside the moving plan, with separate owners and deadlines. Housing coordination and employment onboarding are related, but each has its own source of information.

A few common questions.

When should I contact Adam?

As soon as an Iowa City opportunity becomes a serious possibility. An early conversation can focus on orientation and questions, even before a housing search begins.

What if I am moving from another country?

Build extra coordination into the plan for time zones, travel, and the documentation requested by housing providers or lenders. Confirm employment and immigration requirements with the appropriate employer contacts and advisers.
